The church on the eve of the German Reformation was notable in that every single one of the Catholics were Christian and vice versa. They were interchangeable but, as time went on, everyone became just Christians or they became Catholics and that affected German society, especially their government.
In Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses, he has the idea that grace and power and everything good can be achieved through faith and Luther vigorously objected to the corruption of the church and the practice of selling indulgences.
