I think that in the play hamlet it is a metaphor and continuation of hamlets psychology and his inner struggle with killing people in general I think eventually he gets so mad did the fact that he has to kill someone and he doesn't want to even though he doesn't like the person he doesn't want to kill anyone and i think that exactly drove him insane to the point where he has to kill people hamlet is trying to do the right thing in his own mind and inadvertently making everything worse he's not trying to but he is because he doesn't know what he's doing and he doesn't know how to stop in the book it said that he was so smart and that he really liked to learn but eventually it turned into him being this stereotypical madman laughing and killing people just for basically nothing i mean think about the fact that he killed someone in his mother's mothers room just to scare her that's not something that someone who's very sane would do
