In Dante's Inferno there are many Greek references. Now, my question posed to you is why, if it's such a biblical story, are there so many references from other religious backgrounds such as Greek including the river Styx, Cerberus, Medusa, the oracles, and other religious beings commonly associated with the underworld?.

Now you might have had the same question I did. Why would this religious book have anything to do with Greece or Rome? Now I would have to say this. Is the book real? did Dante actually go down to the hell? No it's a story. Just like in a story, you have to make characters that people can relate to. If I wanted to make a superhero story I would have them maybe reference another character from a time that we know now. We don't all know ancient mythology but back then they did.

Lots of characters that are now very popular, in the future will not be very popular. Just like how Greek religion is not very popular today. It is a little popular thanks to the movies and the shows, but back then, it was really, really popular and everyone knew it. Now you don't.
