Telescopes are the most important unimportant thing ever. They help us understand what's in our universe, where we are, and what a black hole is. However, we do not need telescopes very much in our daily lives. If I go to my 9:00 to 5:00 job, I don't need a telescope to tell me that Mars is 3 AU away from me. Every single telescope has a purpose, and although it takes millions upon millions of dollars to build them while other people are struggling to eat, we still at least want to figure out what composition the stars are made of.
