The steps leading up to Italian unification were, for one, they wanted freedom. They didn't have the freedom to do a lot of things that they wanted such as prefume of the press and freedom of religion. They wanted that the second thing they wanted was to be different from Prussia. Prussia was another country that became part of Germany. However, Italians wanted to see themselves as different.
The unification of Germany mainly consisted of the confederation of German states, led by Prussia, for defense, after the Napoleonic Wars. They all wanted to be together because war sucks. It drains on your money because you need to buy battleships and great armies that you must sustain.
