In the book The Fairy Queen there are a lot of gods. There is lots of references to gods and lots of mythological creatures that have been imposed by gods. Usually when the creatures interpret the gods they interpret them as something bad as negative, and the main character has to go around them. In this case, the main character represents all of Christianity so, in a way, the the author is trying to represent that the knight is cutting through the gods as if God was Himself therefore i insisting that the Christian faith is more substantial than the mythological faith, in and of itself. Why would God do this? Well, it's kind of what I imagine Marvel does to DC and DC does to marvel. They see one character and they put it against another and they say whichever one is their favorite wins. If i put God up against Zeus, I believe God would win, but if someone who believes in Zeus pit God against zeus Zeus, they would believe in Zeus for the win. Just like in dante's Inferno it is important for us to realize what is popular for them back then is not popular for us now, like how the rock is popular now, the mythological creatures were popular back then.
